A complete system

In Volvo Penta’s Stage V concept, the engine and exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) work in perfect harmony to deliver performance to match customer needs while meeting upcoming emission standards. The high efficiency of the aftertreatment system allows for low engine complexity – the end result is that the technology across the Stage V range is optimized for maximized reliability and uptime.

Common rail injection system 

Contributes to an outstanding fuel efficiency and keeps down the noise levels emitted by the engine - which is very important for equipment operating in urban environments.

All heat mode devices on the engine 

Volvo Penta has selected to use an air inlet throttle, uncooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and an electrical exhaust pressure governor (EPG) for highly effective heat management of the engine. All three heat mode devices work together to enable maximized efficiency of the exhaust aftertreatment and they thereby deliver maximized uptime, fuel efficiency and low cooling requirements.

No high temperature regeneration 

Due to the fact that no sulfur regeneration in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst is required, only soot regeneration is needed to clean the diesel particulate filter (DPF). There is no need for addittional fuel injection to create this regeneration, it is always achieved by the engine's highly efficient heat management.

Volvo Penta’s Stage V engine and EATS are designed to work together to maximize passive regeneration during normal operation. The engine-mounted heat management devices will automatically maintain the exhaust temperature at an optimum level. This leads to maximized uptime for the customer.

How the Stage V aftertreatment technology works

Engine range with a global footprint

The Stage V line-up includes Volvo Penta’s all five engine models – D5, D8, D11, D13 and D16 – offering the same power range from 105 to 565 kW (143-770 hp) as the  existing offer for industrial, off-road applications. The new Stage V range ensures installation commonality between different emission levels. The engine program will be consistent, from Stage II to Stage V, which is hugely beneficial for OEMs. Thanks to the compatibility with earlier emission legislations, customers can integrate solutions from across emission stages minimizing the need for re-engineering.
